A PhD is a certificate given by a university. Usually to get a PhD, you have to go to school, then college, then university, then afterwards you stay at university and do what’s called research (this means you either do some experiments, or read lots and lots of books to discover something new). You then write what you’ve discovered in a big book and if what you’ve discovered is good enough, you will get a PhD. Once you have a PhD, you can call yourself Doctor.

Hello, a PhD is a Doctorate, a level 8 educational award and currently the highest awarded in the UK. There are several types of Doctorates such as DEng (Doctorate of Engineering) but a ‘PhD’ is the most common.

It is the highest academic award you can get in the UK – and people with a PhD (or a doctorate) are known as Doctor 🙂
