  Thats not something I really know about, although we can tell a lot about how a dog is feeling from their behaviour – thats a really interesting thing to learn about.

Yes.

Firstly, you can study the dog’s behavioural signs. A dog that appears nervous when people walk close by might be sign that it has been kicked / abused in the past and is suffering from anxiety (excessive fear).

Secondly it’s possible to put dogs in machines such as an MRI and see how their brains respond directly:
